Civil War Campaigns in the Heartland

Many historians now believe that the Civil War was decided in the Western Theater, the immense and varied landscape between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River. Yet scholarship has traditionally focused on the Eastern Theater of the war.

Civil War Campaigns in the Heartland aims to resolve this imbalance and spark further investigation of the often overlooked Western Theater. Each of the Western Theater's major campaigns - from Shiloh to Vicksburg and Chickamauga to Mobile - is examined in its own volume, with multiple volumes on Vicksburg and the Atlanta Campaign. In the essays, both established and new historians probe previously unexplored facets of each campaign. From analyzing tactics and measuring the impact of the campaigns on civilians to scrutinizing commanders and their relationships, this exciting new series provides readers with an in-depth exploration of the Western Theater.

Series editor Steven E. Woodworth is a professor of history at Texas Christian University. He is the author, co-author, or editor of twenty-seven books, including Nothing but Victory: The Army of the Tennessee, 1861-1865. He won the prestigious Fletcher Pratt award for Jefferson Davis and His Generals and Davis and Lee at War.

Series editor Charles D. Grear is an assistant professor of history at Prairie View A&M University.  He is the author, co-author, and editor of three books, including Why Texans Fought in the Civil War and The Fate of Texas: The Civil War and the Lone Star State.
